Lipedema


Lipedema is a fat distribution disorder that regularly failsis recognized. 11% of all women have this condition to a greater or lesser extent. It occurs exclusively in women and is influenced by hormonal factors influences and genetic predisposition. Lipedema often develops during or just after puberty, pregnancy or menopause. Lipedema becomes characterized by symmetrical progressive increase of subcutaneous fatty tissue in mainly the lower extremities (but not the feet!) pain, tenderness, easy bruising and no effect of leg elevation or diet. Most patients have normal stature in the upper extremity, resulting in an average difference of two clothing sizes between upper and lower and lower body.

Lymphedema


Lymphedema is a lymphatic vessel disorder with an abnormal engorgement of proteins and fluid in the body tissue as a result of a disturbed balance between supply and removal of moisture. The symptoms that can arise from this are: swelling, fatigue, a feeling of heaviness, pain, restrictions in movement, in everyday life functioning, skin abnormalities and infections. Lymphedema is congenital. From birth there are then fewer lymphatic vessels are present, which can cause swelling in the course of life originate. Lymphedema develops in a mild form between 18-35 years, more extensive sometimes form from childhood. Most forms of lymphedema are not hereditary, although there can often be a predisposition in a family. Sometimes lymphedema develops after a heart attack surgery and is relatively common after cancer treatment.
