Varicose veins are a common problem that is often experienced as very bothersome. Fortunately, there are various treatment options available, including wearing compression stockings. In this blog, we will discuss what varicose veins are, how they develop, and why compression stockings can be an effective way to relieve symptoms and prevent further complications.

 What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged veins located just under the skin, often in the legs. Although they usually do not cause any symptoms, they can sometimes lead to issues such as tired legs, a heavy feeling, itching, or pain.

Symptoms of varicose veins

Varicose veins can have various symptoms. The most common ones are:

  • Tired legs: A heavy or tired feeling in the legs, especially at the end of the day.
  • Itching and pain: The skin around the varicose veins may itch or be painful.
  • Swelling: Feet or lower legs may swell due to increased pressure in the veins.
  • Skin changes: In severe cases, discoloration, eczema, or skin ulcers may develop.

Factors that can lead to varicose veins

  • Pregnancy: The increasing weight of the baby and hormonal changes can put pressure on the veins.
  • Age: As we get older, the elasticity of our veins decreases.
  • Overweight: Excess weight can increase pressure on the veins.
  • Prolonged standing: Jobs that require prolonged standing can increase the risk of varicose veins.

What can you do about varicose veins?

  • Laser treatment: A probe is guided into the varicose vein using ultrasound, and then laser or radiofrequency energy is used to close the vein.
  • Surgery: If other methods do not work, the varicose vein can be surgically removed.
  • Sclerotherapy: A chemical solution is injected into the vein, causing it to close. This is often followed by wearing compression stockings to promote healing.

Treating and preventing varicose veins with compression stockings

Compression stockings help with varicose veins by applying a gradient pressure to the legs, with the highest pressure at the ankles and gradually decreasing upwards. This promotes blood circulation back to the heart and reduces blood pooling in the veins. As a result, symptoms such as tired legs, a heavy feeling, and pain can be relieved. Additionally, the pressure helps prevent fluid accumulation in the tissues, reducing swelling in the legs. This contributes to overall improved comfort and can help prevent further worsening of varicose veins.
