How to prevent traveler’s thrombosis during long journeys

Traveler's thrombosis, also known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), is a condition that can occur during prolonged periods of inactivity, such as long flights, train rides, or road trips. Though relatively uncommon, the condition can pose serious health risks, particularly if left unmanaged. In this blog, we explore the causes, symptoms, and effective prevention methods for traveler’s thrombosis, including the benefits of wearing compression socks.

What is traveler's thrombosis?

Traveler's thrombosis is a condition that can occur after a long journey, during which someone sits still for an extended period of time. The medical term for this is deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein of the body, usually in the legs. Although the risk of thrombosis is low (about 1 in two to five thousand), there are certain groups of people who are at increased risk. These include the elderly, overweight individuals, tall people, those with a history of thrombosis, pregnant women, and cancer patients.

Symptoms of traveler's thrombosis:

There are several symptoms that can indicate traveler's thrombosis. Swelling often occurs around the foot, ankle, or leg, and the legs often feel warm. Some other examples include having a tight skin, discoloration of the skin (often red or blue), suddenly visible veins, and shortness of breath.

Be aware that symptoms can occur a few days after traveling. If you are already experiencing symptoms, we recommend our medical socks. If you experience severe symptoms, consult a doctor.

Prevent traveler's thrombosis with compression stockings during long journeys

The key to avoiding traveler’s thrombosis lies in maintaining proper blood circulation during long journeys. Here are some practical prevention methods:

  1. Stay Active: Take regular breaks to stretch or walk during flights, train rides, or long car trips.
  2. Wear Compression Socks: These socks apply graduated pressure to your legs, stimulating blood flow and reducing the risk of clots and swelling.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol or caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration.
  4. Choose Comfortable Seating: Opt for an aisle seat if possible, allowing more freedom to move your legs.
  5. Perform Simple Exercises: Rotate your ankles, flex your feet, and wiggle your toes to keep your blood circulating.
  6. Dress Comfortably: Avoid tight clothing that could restrict blood flow.

How compression socks can help

Compression socks are scientifically proven to reduce the risk of DVT during long journeys. They provide graduated pressure, with the highest compression at the ankles, gradually decreasing up the leg. This helps push blood back to the heart, preventing fluid buildup and reducing swelling.

Research by Clarke and Hopewell (2007) found that wearing compression socks during flights reduced the risk of DVT by up to 80%. Participants who wore compression socks also reported significantly less swelling and leg discomfort compared to those who didn’t.
